COMMUNITY & ADVOCACY and MOTHER (and ME)

Many know the unique tragedy of this disease, but few know that Alzheimer’s is one of the most critical public health crises facing America. Shockingly, more people die from Alzheimer's each year than from brain cancer, prostate cancer, and essential hypertension combined. And it’s not only a profound human tragedy– it’s an overwhelming economic one as well. The future costs associated with Alzheimer's are so significant that they threaten to bankrupt Medicare, Medicaid, and the life savings of millions of Americans.

Yet despite these alarming statistics, it has been challenging to motivate people to take action with the necessary urgency. Why is that?

During a recent post-performance talk back, David Parris, Director of the Alzheimer’s Association Care Consultants, shared a simple yet powerful insight:

“We need stories.

Statistics don’t do it. They don’t move people to action,

and we need them to act, because we’re heading towards a health crisis of epic proportions.”

The play, MOTHER (and me), has resonated with audiences across the US, touching lives with its heartfelt poignancy and surprising humor. It’s an uplifting solo performance piece that explores the common threads of caregiving, navigating the healthcare system, senior care, finances, and the process of letting go.
